How I set up a "fake" blackberry account

My first blog ever so go easy on me, I thought I would share how I got a fake blackberry service running on my p1i, without using the blackberry service.

So heres the steps:

GOOGLE MAIL
1 Create yourself a gmail account. You can get a free gmail account by heading to www.gmail.com

2 Activate Imap on your gmail account. Do this by going to SETTINGS - FORWARDING AND POP/IMAP - ENABLE IMAP

WORK/PERSONAL MAIL
1 In our office we use Microsoft Outlook, you may have something different but in theory you should be able to import you gmail account into your outlook account.

2Now that you have imported your gmail account into your outlook account you need to set up a rule. This rule must say the following.
'When email is received, send a copy to my gmail inbox'

P1i Settings
1 You now want to set up your p1i with the imap settings from the gmail account
on your p1i - select Messages - More - Settings - email accounts - more - new account.
Now name you email account and use the following settings:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - requires SSL: imap.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
Port: 465 or 587
Account Name: your Gmail username (including @gmail.com)
Email Address: your full Gmail email address (username@gmail.com)
Password: your Gmail password

Thats it your done!

So what did you do?
Firstly you created a google account which has loads of space and will receive your emails. You then told outlook to make a copy of any incoming mails and send them to your google account. You then set up your phone to pick up any emails in your google account.

Im on o2, so what Ive done is paid for the unlimited gprs for £7.50 a month, this means i can leave my GPRS running and receive my emails live! Just like blackberry, if you cant get a decent GPRS deal, you could always set up your P1i to only download mails when you say so, this should keep your bill down.

Now, a few uppers and downers

Upsides
1 You receive your emails by push and with only a slight delay
2 You don't have to pay for the blackberry service
3 You can keep your P1i and not have to carry a blackberry.
4 You can control when you receive your emails

Downsides
1 You do need to leave your computer running, so that the outlook rule is always running
2 You need a good package from your network provider to run push email

Thats all for now, ill be updating this site with other P1i tips, secrets, software reviews and anything else P1i related.

Cheers for now
